Exploring the Drum Carder with Henry & Roy Clemes
Workshop Description: Drum carders are a mystery to the average fiber artist: fiber is fed into the carder, ends up on the big drum, and magically turns into a batt. In our ‘Exploring the Drum Carder’ class, students begin the day by learning the history of drum carders, how they work, and why they function the way they do. The fun goes hands on for the rest of the day as we delve into the differences of woolen and worsted carding, explore the many tools that make drum carding more efficient, and crank out four different batts. The first batt will be hand cranked before switching over to Electric Drive for the duration of class. All materials, carders, and tools will be provided.
Student Skill Level: No experience is necessary, but this foundation course is an eye-opener for rookies and veterans alike.
Students to Bring: An attitude for learning! All materials and equipment will be provided. Students may bring drum carders or fiber they would like advice on using or carding.
Materials Fee: Included in the cost of the class. Coffee, continental breakfast, and vegan-friendly buffet lunch are also provided.
Date and Time: Thursday, October 15, 2020. 9am-4pm.
