Mixed Romney skirtings from multiple fleece. These come from the same flock and are mostly medium to dark gray, with a few patches of brown and black. Most locks measure four to five inches in length. As these are skirtings, there is more vegetable matter here than we allow in Good Clean Fiber, but it can all be removed with a flicker or Lock Pop. There are no tag ends (manure) in this skirtings and like all of our Good Clean Fiber, this has been washed and is free of lanolin. Sold in 1 pound (16 oz.) increments.

Our Bliss Subscription club delivers four ounces of fleece each quarter that has been chosen specifically for its hand-spinning qualities. Our Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em Subscription club delivers four ounces of fleece from a breed on the Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List, and each installment includes a passport sticker for the SE2SE program. Our Prime Subscription includes early access to new fleece, but no quarterly fleece delivery.

Since we often purchase an entire clip at one time, not all fleece measure up to our lofty standards for Good Clean Fiber. Imperfect Fleece have one or more minor maladies and their pricing reflects that.

Beautiful fiber!

Such fun to spin! I used the Lock Pop and spun straight from the locks. The color change along each lock was gorgeous. Love how the 2-ply came out--it's yarn with lots of character.

Bobbins you can never have enough!

I have some dyed fleece I’d put off spinning because of the effort involved in prepping it and I wanted to keep colors somewhat separate. The first batch took all afternoon to “pop” the ends and spin to get a very small quantity of yarn-it wasn’t the nicest so a lot of work for a little. Second batch was a coated fleece with blocky locks. The prep was very easy and this time I am popping a lock and spinning it versus popping lots. I’d say still faster and certainly much cleaner than my apron and cat brush to prep. Packaging is custom and beautiful for storing. I am satisfied and would recommend this product.

Handy tool - nicely made

The Lock Pop seems like a very nice addition to my little arsenal of fiber processing tools (hand cards, combs, flicker, pet comb). So far I'm finding it more ergonomic to use than a flicker. The Lock Pop is impressive at getting the VM out of a lock of fleece. ALL the VM falls out, even sticky seeds. The Lock Pop is nicely designed - it's clear that Clemes and Clemes has considered the exact height and curve to use for the wood block, as well as the specs for the carding cloth. It's a satisfyingly attractive tool - since for me fleece processing is about going into a relaxing, meditative mode, the look and feel of the tools I use is also part of the enjoyment. I am guessing my Lock Pop will last a long time, as long as I follow the technique on the Clemes and Clemes video, where you pop the lock onto the carding cloth gently until it opens up, then draw the lock through the wires, which cleans it like magic.

My first wheel is a Clemes and Clemes from 1974. It's almost as old as I am! It was an unexpected "inheritance" from the mother of a deceased friend and is a treasured mainstay of my textile art tool collection. I'm a tall woman so I really appreciate the height of the castle, and it has a lovely weight to the wheel - when it gets rolling it stays rolling. I find it easy to spin for hours even though it is a single treadle. I also enjoy the ease of the double drive - as the description states it requires much less adjustment as the bobbin fills, even with jumbo bobbins.
I am so grateful that Clemes and Clemes started producing their Traditional again so that I was able to purchase additional accessories (like the Jumbo flyer and bobbins) for the old girl. With plenty of oil and care I know she'll last my lifetime and likely beyond as well. Thank you Clemes and Clemes!
